How to Start Your Tai Chi or Qigong Practice

Taking the First Step

Beginning a Tai Chi or Qigong practice is simpler than many people expect. You do not need special equipment, prior fitness training, or flexibility. What you do need is a willingness to learn, a commitment to showing up consistently, and an open mind. The first session can begin right where you are.

Finding the Right Style

There are many styles of both Tai Chi and Qigong, and no single style is right for everyone. When choosing, consider your current health and mobility, your interest in either the health or martial aspect, and whether you prefer a more active or more meditative practice. The most important factor is finding something you enjoy — because consistency depends on engagement.

Learning from a Teacher

While books and videos can be helpful introductions, learning from a qualified teacher remains the best way to begin. A good teacher can correct your posture and movement in real time, answer questions, and provide guidance that is tailored to your individual body and needs. Look for classes at community centers, wellness studios, or dedicated Tai Chi and Qigong schools.

Building a Consistent Practice

Start with sessions of 15–20 minutes, three to four times a week. Consistency matters more than duration — regular short sessions build skill and benefit far more effectively than occasional long ones. Over time, as the movements become familiar and the body adapts, you can gradually extend your sessions and deepen your practice.

What to Expect

In the early weeks, you may find the movements unfamiliar and your mind easily distracted. This is completely normal. With patience and regular practice, the movements become more natural, the breath more easeful, and the mind more settled. Most practitioners notice meaningful improvements in their energy, mood, and physical comfort within the first few months — and many continue practicing for a lifetime.
